The Discussion | Is Retail Therapy Self-Care?
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the concept of retail therapy, retail therapy, according to the Urban Dictionary, is considered “The act of shopping as an outlet for frustration and a reliever of stress.” As someone who is working toward a counseling degree with a focus on addictions, I am reluctant to promote shopping as self-care because of the potential negative impacts of shopping addiction. For that reason, I want it to be clear, shopping addiction is different in that shopping is constantly on the shopper’s mind and is done more often and in greater quantities than is sustainable. Addiction implies that the addict is no longer functioning. That differs from retail therapy because shopping as a form of self-care and stress-relief is done far less frequently and is not that person’s main outlet. Additionally, it is sustainable.
Retail Therapy Ideas
Now that we know the difference between shopping addiction and shopping as self-care, here are some great ways to shop for self-care:
- Buy a new fragrance each month
- Buy a new outfit that makes you feel beautiful
- Shop for your home
- Buy something nice for a loved one
- Buy new skincare or makeup products
- Get something you want but don’t view as a necessity
- Buy a movie you’ve been dying to see
My Opinion | Do I Shop for Self-Care?
Do I shop as a form of self-care? Yes and no. For me, it is not the act of shopping that is therapeutic. Usually, when I am doing some retail therapy, I am buying houseplants or furniture online. What makes shopping therapeutic for me is planning my home and then opening the package and adding the new item to that perfect place. As someone who does practice retail therapy, I recommend setting a budget if you plan on taking part in shopping for self-care. This way, you are sure you can afford to do the shopping and are less likely to overspend.
