So, if you want to see your time stretching, start making a list of all tasks you go through every day for a week. Next, check which ones are not aligned to any of your goals – considering that you got step 1 already done. Then, just stop doing them. Simple like this.

Still, you made find some tasks that give you that mixed feeling. If so, leave them aside, in a different list, and move to the next topic.

3. Learn to Organize a Schedule

You got rid of everything that wasn’t helping you to achieve your goals. So it might be that you got some free time in your hands. Sounds great, but now you have to add things that you probably weren’t doing, and that is important to you. Or maybe you need to spend more time doing something that you enjoy.

The only way to make it happen without falling back into the same trap again is by changing your schedule to find time for every task and also strike a balance. BOSS Personal Planners has a lot of various physical and digital planners available, but I chose their budget planner! I chose this one because it is unlike anything I offer here at ElizabethJournals and it is a planner type that I have always wanted to be more proficient at using. Perhaps having a digital version would make it possible!

First Impressions: BOSS Planner Digital Budget Planner

My first impressions scrolling through the planner were positive! I loved the functional tabs and did not find it too difficult to navigate at all. The planner was pretty self-explanatory and had some really neat sections that I would not have thought of on my own. I was testing the planner on my phone and laptop since I do not have a tablet. This posed a challenge, but the planner was completely usable on both devices!

Final Thoughts: Digital Planner

After playing around on the digital planner for a while, I realized that typing function was challenging to use with my touch screen laptop. Perhaps a mouse and some practice would have helped. It could also be the specific PDF reader at fault. That is why I did not vote this in ‘the negatives’ above; however, it is something to keep in mind. The typing function was far easier when I used my phone. The planner is more challenging to use on the smaller phone screen, but zooming in made it doable. I would definitely recommend you use your laptop or a tablet if you have access to one. Overall, I loved the Budget planner and the concept of a digital planner! I wish I were more consistent in using one; it would be super beneficial!

While I still prefer writing on paper, a digital planner would be an excellent solution for anyone who does not want to carry around a notebook in addition to the devices they already carry around!! I highly recommend the BOSS Budget Planner!

Habits can be incredibly useful tools but also very very difficult to nail down and maintain. Not only are habits difficult to build, they can also be even more difficult to maintain. Regardless, they are incredibly useful and necessary to enhance and maintain your high levels of productivity. This article walks you through what habits are, how to build them, how to maintain them, and a massive list of habit ideas!

What Are Habits?

Habits are activities that are done regularly or consistently. While I am going to be talking about useful or healthy habits in this article, it is important to note that not all habits are useful or healthy. Many of us have very unhealthy or not useful habits such as biting your nails, avoiding doing dishes, ignoring your physical ailments, etc. While useless or unhealthy habits are not the focus of this article, I wanted to not it because many people attempt build good habits to replace bad habits. This practice is incredibly useful and actually a more effective method in breaking bad habits.

How to Build A Habit

The most important first step in building a habit is to understand what your goal is. Habits are only useful if they have a purpose or an intended end-goal. So, before you can create your habit, create a smart goal! Unfamiliar with SMART goals? I have a whole other article that breaks down these goals, check this article out before you continue. Learn more about SMART goals.

For am example, let’s say your overall goal is to lose 20 pounds in 6 months by exercising more and eating better. That is a great SMART goal and identifies some habits that you need to build. First you need to start exercising more (habit #1) and then you need to eat better (habit #2). Two habits can be a lot for one person at one time, so its important that you start simple. Build one habit at a time before moving an to another habit.

Further, it is important to keep a habit simple–make it easy to do (and to remember to do). For example, if you’re trying to floss each night, keep the floss next to your toothpaste so you see it each time you brush your teeth. If a habit is too complex, it will be difficult to keep up with it. So, don’t be afraid to take small steps to build up to a more complex version of a habit.

So you have some of the rules of habit building, but, how do you actually build the habit? Now that you have a concept of some of the ideas, build on them. A good habit incorporates the following:

  • Simplicity
  • A goal in mind
  • Consistency
  • Accountability
  • Rewards
  • Stick with it

The Best Times to Start A New Habit

You can start a habit at any point in time; however, there are certain times that are better. Some good times to start building a new habit are at the beginning of a month or week (the fresh start effect) or at a big life shift (like moving). These are good times to start building a new habit because you have a fresh supply of new triggers that can remind you to do the habit. Without older triggers and possibly older habits holding you down, you can easily create new habits with positive triggers.  

How to Build & Maintain Habits

Now that you have started to build a habit, how do you continue to maintain it? The best ways to maintain a habit include sticking with it, rewarding yourself, being consistent, keeping track of your progress, and having an accountability partner.

Sticking with it & Being Consistent

Sticking to your goals and being consistent in maintaining your habits are essential practices in maintaining a habit. The point of a habit is to do the task consistently. So, if you fail to be consistent, then you will likely lose your habit entirely. Likewise, if you do not stick to your habit before it becomes habitual, then it will not solidify as a habit. So, to effectively maintain any habit you wish to have, you must be consistent and persistent.

Keeping Track of Your Progress

Keeping track of your habit progress is a great way to maintain your goal. Create a log of the times you’ve completed your goal, tips that work for you, things that you’d consider a barrier to success, and maybe even plan for rewarding yourself at certain intervals.

Have An Accountability Partner

Another great means of maintaining a good habit is to have an accountability partner. An accountability partner is someone who can help check in with you regarding your habit, remind you of your goal, go along with your for some of your tasks, and help keep your morale up. They can help you stick to your daily habit by providing both the trigger and reminder to do the habit, as well as the reward.

Everyone is talking about time management skills. Further, there are tools such as getting enough sleep, organizing, and planning that help you polish your time management skills. Professionals and executives are preoccupied not to lose time, as they have many meetings to hold, presentations to make, and proposals to prepare. 

But what if we approach the problem from another point of view? Some people say that they do not have time for themselves or activities that are not related to either work or cozy nights with friends. And they should ask themselves: which is the root cause? The lack of time or their perspective on time?

It turns out that most people that say they do not have time are not aware of the time spent on specific tasks and activities. Because if you say that you do not have time, you won’t have time because you think your schedule is already full. And yes, developing and improving time management skills can help you organize and plan your tasks and activities better. But the first thing you should do is to develop self-awareness. 

What Is Self-Awareness?

It is important not to mix up self-awareness with consciousness. Let’s take an example to make things simpler. Let’s say that you are an executive of a company and you need to have an overview of the activities of the company. Further, you need to make sure that the projects you want to create align with the company values, mission, and goals. You need to conduct meetings with sponsors and clients.

You need to supervise the activity of your teams and ensure they do not lose track. However, you might often find yourself doing overtime—not finding free time to attend your kids’ events or enjoy the company of your friends. This comes with dissatisfaction. It is clear that there is a problem with time management and that you can organize your activities better, but how can you do this? 

The answer is: to develop self-awareness. A self-aware executive knows that work is essential because it provides the necessary resources for living. But he or she also knows that family and friends are important, and spending time with them is good for their mental health. Self-awareness means that you are aware of your values, thoughts, and actions and how some of them are incongruent with each other.

So, you might be wondering what exactly to write about? It is fairly common that one’s mind goes blank when you see a white paper sheet you know you have to fill. You can start to monitor some easy and accessible behaviors or areas in your life. For example, you can begin to observe your positive and negative feelings of one day.

Or, you can start analyzing changes you want to make in your life and behavior. Like this, all your ideas and thoughts on the process will be on the paper, things that will help you become more aware of them. Try to identify your feelings about a regular day and act upon changing any negative thoughts. You might notice that you spend too much time at work, and you neglect your self-care and personal life.

Self-awareness leads to changes, so do not be afraid to start journaling. Make journaling a habit and set up a time during the day when you submit another entry in your journal. Make it expressive, and do not be afraid to express your deepest thoughts and feelings. You can spend no more than 20 minutes per day, and you will see an improvement in your self-awareness level.

Mindfulness is another way you can develop your self-awareness, as it is a meditation technique at its core. If you are mindful, you live in the present. And when you live in the present, you are more aware of your thoughts and ideas. Further, if you are more aware in this way, you can quickly act upon changing them. 

There are lots of forms of meditation and mindfulness, and you can choose the one you feel is right for you at the present moment. You can find online guided meditation videos that are of enormous help, especially if you are a beginner.

Some techniques focus on developing a more robust understanding of your inner world. These techniques help you to see how you can improve your awareness as well as how you relate to the ones around you. Other techniques focus on finding harmful thoughts and behaviors so that you can act against them. 

Either meditation technique you choose, it will help you become more self-aware and boost your time management skills. Planning and organizing activities will be easier than before because your productivity will increase too.

Feedback is an essential part of everyone’s life, even though it is a subject that is mostly discussed in corporate settings. If given correctly, feedback can help you become more self-aware of your behavior. Our behaviors are so well ingrained in our way of living and seeing life that we grow less and less self-aware of them. But people that work or live with us can quickly identify destructive habits and their opinion can help you improve your skills. 

It is not easy to ask for feedback. Who would want to hear about their flaws? But constructive criticism can develop and improve self-awareness, which will lead to boosting in time management skills. Even if it is difficult and challenging, ask people around you for feedback.

Start small, identify some behaviors you want to change, and ask for feedback. But be careful: feedback is efficient if it is given by people you trust and respect and whose opinion matters to you. Choose close friends, business partners, your children, and your spouse to share with you their opinion about your habits. Like this, you will become aware of the impact of your behavior on the people that surround you.

Most of us are aware (to an extent) that sleep influences productivity. Stumblingly, 34 percent of US workers do not reap enough sleep. Reportedly, sleep deprivation, the major productivity killer, costs $63.2 billion across the United States.

Sleep and Productivity Relation Based Researches

  1. Sleep disruptions induce reduced employee productivity at a high loss to organizations, concluded in a study.
    • More than four thousand employees were distributed in four different groups based on their sleep health. Workers experiencing insomnia or insufficient sleep, at-risk, and the fourth one, having a healthy sleep.
    • It’s not surprising – The lowest productive groups – Insomnia and insufficient sleep suffered workers.
  2. Another study, done by StayWell involved 0.6 million employees from 66 different companies. This study found that improper sleep schedules could cause weakened workplace productivity.
  3. One thousand and seven adults participated in this study as a diverse community sample. The study focused on health and organizational concerns such as anxiety, workload, coworker issues, financial stress, lack of training, job hours, and sleep patterns.

Sleep disorders diminish the probability of transcending at work. Common Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders are a typical dilemma for many people. Although it can sometimes be hard to tell if your sleepless nights can be classified as a disorder or just a circumstantial fluke. There are several common “sleep robbers” that steal your sweet dreams away.

  • You may also have insomnia if you keep waking up throughout the night after you have fallen asleep. This lack of rest will lead to drowsiness the next day. Yet when you go to lay your head on the pillow after the day is done, you find that you still cannot sleep.
  • A less well-known disorder is narcolepsy, which involves daytime sleepiness that is excessive and uncontrollable. Narcolepsy goes beyond that occasional tiredness. It can cause “sleep attacks” even in broad daylight when you’re at work or school. You may feel weak and lose control while laughing or experiencing strong emotions. This is as though you’re going to sleep right when you’re emotional.
  • Restless leg syndrome is a disorder that can feel uncontrollable for some people. It leads to urges to move your legs and arms when you’re asleep, keeping you awake even if you’re dead tired.
  • Circadian rhythm disorders are more environmental. Examples include if you are working the late shift, experiencing jet lag, or encountering other circumstances that force you to be awake when you would otherwise be asleep. These factors can lead to trouble falling asleep and staying awake at normal times.
  • Another common disorder is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when your upper airway passages are blocked, causing you to briefly stop breathing while sleeping. It’s a frightening experience and one that has kept many awake as a result.

Will more sleep help you get productivity? 

Studies proved it. I acknowledge it. 

I’ve accommodated my morning schedule to prove this point.

I began to get up at least one and a half hour before everyone else to start my work early. Though I was trying to be more performance-oriented, I found that I was tired in the middle of the day. This was likely because I had only gotten up too early.

So, I decided to go through an experiment to find out whether more sleep would help me be more organized. 

And I believe that it works.

I’m still practicing to be a morning person.

I get up early and chant a mantra for 15 minutes. I prepare breakfast for my family, get a cup of coffee, and get our little boy up and ready for school.

This grants me an extra hour to check LinkedIn updates, browse my Twitter feed, sending out some emails, and get everything synced without being rushed.

With this on-going daily routine practice, my mind is becoming sharper, and my thought process is more organized. And I’ve told you one change I applied throughout the process; I have not stripped myself of proper sleep.

No, really. How Yoga Can Raise Your Motivation and Productivity

On average, we spend 8 hours at work, sometimes doing overtime. Then, we come home and continue with our routine, cooking dinner, doing homework with kids, and continue being in the loop. 

With so much going on, we have less and less time to take care of ourselves. In fact, the work-home loop starts looking like a downward spiral with time, resulting in more stress, loss of motivation and productivity. 

What Does the Research Say?

Yoga is among the methods to tackle this problem. Different sources of research claim that yoga:

Reduces stress. Loss of motivation and productivity is often caused by stress that becomes chronic over time. According to recent research posted by the International Journal of Preventing Medicine, 52 surveyed women experienced less stress and anxiety after just 12 sessions of yoga. 

Improves physical activity and self-efficacy. According to research from the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 41 surveyed participants with PTSD reported feeling more motivated after several regular sessions of yoga, with reduced stress and anxiety symptoms as well. 

Boosts memory and concentration. To help you become more productive, yoga has a positive effect on our cognitive abilities, according to a study published in the Biological Psychology journal. Reportedly, 108 participants reported that breathing exercises that Hatha yoga includes, helped them feel more focused. 

Over the years, more and more people have started practicing yoga, either as a main physical activity or in addition to other activities like going to the gym or doing Pilates. 

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) shares some stats on why Americans try yoga. Among those reasons, the most popular are:

  • Less stress and improved concentration (86% of surveyed)
  • Better physical and mental health (82% of surveyed)
  • Better emotional state and more motivation (67% of surveyed)

NCCIH also recommends yoga as one of the additional treatment methods for patients with different mental health conditions. 

Yoga Poses to Boost Motivation and Productivity

As someone who spent 10 years in the downward spiral of losing productivity and motivation, I was looking for a way to get out of this vicious circle. It motivated me to participate in a  ‘30 Days of Yoga for Self-Care Challenge’. Inspired by my results, I prepared a routine that I now do every day to feel motivated focused.

Here’s my everyday yoga routine, proven to help you raise motivation and productivity. 

Tadasana and Ushtrasana for Morning Energy Boost

Tadasana is what I begin my day with. This is a perfect pose to do a morning stretch and wake up your body and mind. Also called the Mountain Pose, it is also good for helping you cope with a headache and improves posture. 

Here are some tips to make the most out of this pose:

  • Challenge yourself by doing this pose with eyes closed. This way you’ll be able to find balance without paying attention to the outer environment, helping you concentrate better. 
  • For beginners: you can improve your balance by standing with your feet slightly apart. 
  • You can position your arms as you see fit. A common way is to lift them upward to stretch your whole body. 

Ustrasana is another post to help you find balance and feel more focused. Besides allowing you to stretch your body and feel the balance, it is also good for your digestive system, helping you work on the stomach muscles. 

There are different variations of this pose. I’ve found that the following approaches help worked best for my body:

  • Slowly leaning backward helps gradually stretch your body and not hurt your muscles. 
  • Correct breathing technique is crucial when pushing your body above the waist outward and upward. 
  • It’s best to do this pose in two approaches, holding the position for no more than 30 seconds. 

While Ustrasana is recommended as the ultimate pose to wake up your body, Tadasana also works well before sleep, helping your body to de-stress. 

Seated Crescent Moon and Chair Pigeon Pose While Working

While at work, you can often find yourself unproductive and unmotivated, especially after sitting behind your desk for several hours. I found that some yoga poses can be very helpful to change your focus and bring back the motivation. 

I usually start my yoga routine at work from a seated crescent moon pose. This is a stretching pose for your spine and neck muscles. How does it help motivation and productivity?

  • You have to pay attention to every step of this pose, as you can strain your neck muscles. Thus, you bring back the focus by paying close attention to your body. 
  • This pose requires you to follow a breathing technique. Exhaling and inhaling correctly will help you feel more energized, as you slowly help your body de-stress. 

To finish my brief yoga session at work, I usually do a chair pigeon pose. Although it’s often recommended for seniors to prevent them from hurting their muscles, this pose is perfect to do at your desk (also, you don’t want to attract unnecessary attention). 

Tip! When doing this pose, try not to do it on a rolling chair. For this pose, it’s better to choose one that stands steadily. 

Balasana and Savasana for Better Sleep

 The quality of your sleep greatly impacts your motivation and productivity. After all, sleep-deprivation is the first reason that kills motivation and impairs our ability to focus. However, a little bit of yoga before sleep can help you sleep like a baby. 

For my simple evening yoga routine, I start with Balasana or a child’s pose. This is an effective pose for:

  • Gently stretching hips and thighs
  • Relieving back and neck pain after a long day of sitting behind the desk
  • Calms the brain and relieves fatigue

To finish my yoga stretch before going to sleep, I relax my body with a Savasana or a corpse pose. This is a perfect pose for complete relaxation of your body and mind, as you lie down on a surface and simply allow yourself to rest. 

Tip! While doing Savasana, you can turn on some music and meditate to achieve the complete relaxation of your body and mind.

Doing yoga is proven to be a good method to raise your motivation and productivity if you do it persistently. I found that regular yoga sessions are effective for those, who want to feel more focused and motivated, whilst helping you take care of your body as well.
